IRVIN ARTILLERY ROSTER Company C of 11th Georgia
Artillery Battalion
This unit was originally formed as the "Irvin Guards" in Wilkes County and Lincoln County, GA and designated as Company A of the 9th Georgia Infantry Regiment. The company was named for the late Isiah Tucker Irvin, Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives, who had been killed in a steamboat explosion in 1860. It was transferred into the artillery service on December 12, 1861 by Special Order 580. Renamed the "Irvin Artillery", it was assigned to the newly formed 11th Georgia Artillery Battalion. Captain John Lane, a West Point graduate familiar with artillery and also the son of former Mexican War General, U.S. Senator and 1860 Vice Presidential candidate Joseph Lane, was named as the new commander of the company -- replacing Captain G.G. Norman. Forty five additional recruits joined the unit on March 21, 1862 in camp at Orange Court House.
